ReplyDeleteI took to sewing after joining a quilting bee--I'd always wanted to learn to quilt and a former boss of mine happened to be a quilter and invited me to join in. All of the new fabric designers out there have really kept me interested, too!
I think it was amy butler that inspired me to start sewing. I just had to make one of her bags! Of course It took a few years, but I finally purchased a sewing machine over the summer and now I just want to sew all the time.

ReplyDeleteI learned to sew from my grandma - she is a seamstress, and I spent all of my days at her house as i grew up. I watched her every day, until one day I picked up some scissors and scrap fabric, myself, and made a dress for my doll. I haven't stopped sewing ever since!

My grandmother (maternal) taught me to sew at a young age. She was always crafting something and instilled the joy of creation in me. For my thirteenth birthady she gave me my first sewing machine. I made all my own clothes, then my kids, but when I discovered quilting that became my obsession.

I had a bad breakup and to take my mind off of my broken heart, my mom suggested I make a quilt. For a week straight, I cut, sewed, and sobbed. And by the time my quilt was done a week later, not only did I feel better, I had a gorgeous quilt. Dubbed the "break up quilt" it's still one of my favorite things. And now, sewing, quilting and fabric design are a huge part of who I am today! :)

In fact it's still there b/c I told her that it had to stay there so that I could always work on my sewing while visiting her. ReplyDeleteI learned to sew one summer when I was about 10. I spent two weeks with my grandmother and she taught me how to sew this really simple top with some of her scraps. I had that top in about 10 different fabrics by the time I went home. A very fond memory for me. :0)

My mom and grandmother inspired me to sew... As a child I remember pulling up a stool and watching my mother make dolls and toys and clothes for us on her Singer. I remember wanting to make things too... Then, several years ago my grandmother was getting so ill we had to move her to assisted living. As she went through her things she decided to give me her 40 year old White sewing machine. Despite the fact that she had 19 grandaughters, I was the one she gave it to. As she said, "you are the one who will use it." And I do! Even being more than 40 years old it works like a dream and is my most prized posession (especially now that she has passed on.) I love nothing more than spending an afternoon with that sewing machine making things.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was a child, I would wake up to hear my mom's sewing machine going in the sewing room. I would curl up in a wingback chair and watch her every Saturday morning. When I was old enough, she began teaching me. I started out making my own clothes. She died in suddenly in 2000 and I inherited her machine. I didn't begin quilting until this year. I have just finished my first quilt using her stash of fabrics. I know she would be proud.

I honestly thought I would hate it and was only agreeing to "sewing lessons" because I thought she was a charming lady and I wanted to spend more time with her, but I ended up loving it. She is still alive and has a sound mind. I take pictures of all of my projects and send them to her.

A lady in my church introduced me to quilting when I was a youth. Now all I need to do is walk into a quilt shop and see all the nice fabrics and I'm inspired to being tons of new projects!
ReplyDeleteMy Nana inspired me to sew. She worked as seamstress from her home, while taking care of her grandchildren. She set my crib up next to her steel gray Juki machine. I have been watching her sew creations filled with love since I was an infant. She set up a sewing machine for me before I even started Kindergarten. She removed the electrical cord, and I sewed away making doll clothes and quilts using the hand wheel.

ReplyDeleteI was totally inspired to sew by Kaffe Fassett. I found his books Gloriuos Patchwork and Passionate Patchwork in a bookshop a few years ago and I set out to buy fabrics at once. I never stopped sewing since and it so enriched my life..
I would LOVE to win the Adriatic fat quarter set.

I had a needle and thread in my hands when I was 5 years old. I watched my aunt do embroidery work. My mom always had the sewing machine out and working on a project. I LOVE to sew.

I decided that I wanted to make quilts after seeing a show on PBS. (I can't remember which one.) So, I got a sewing machine, started sewing, and haven't looked back.
ReplyDeleteI decided to learn to sew when my daughter was born. I pulled my old quilt out that my mom made for me as a child and wanted my little karis to have a quilt of her own. The sewing itself hasn't been the greatest challenge, but finding the time to sew!

My mother taught me to sew as a child. I also had home ec back in junior high. (I am old, I went to jr high, not middle school)

ReplyDeleteI just started quilting a year ago, and can kick myself for not doing it sooner. My sisters have quilted for many years now and I love the quilts they have made. I thought I could never do it, until I got a rotary cutter and a mat for Christmas. And now I'm hooked!! I dream about quilting!!

ReplyDeleteMy grandmother inspired me. She made all of my dresses until I was in high school, including my first prom dress. She also made all my doll's clothes. Now she knits because sitting at the machine hurts her back, and I've taken up the machine.

My longtime girl friend inspired me to sew, we were knitting buddies and then she took a sewing class and made a fabulous bag! I loved all the beautiful fabric and signed up. Best part was I had just found out I was pregnant, and I made alot of baby things. So fun!

ReplyDeleteMy mom is my inspiration. She is elderly now, and is starting to put away all her sewing things. Her hands don't work like they used to, and she is content to just sit and read these days. But, oh, she made the loveliest things, and I will always remember her with a needle in her hand.

My grandmother is my inspiration to sew. She taught me to do all kinds of needle arts: sewing, beading, needlepoint, crocheting. She was one talented woman and I miss her terribly. I will be subscribing to this blog right now.

My grandma inspired me to sew. I remember receiving lots of handmade gifts as a child and watching her make handmade quilts on this huge quilt rack set up in her garage.

ReplyDeleteMy sister! One day she refused to sew anything else for me. She forced me to learn how to thread my machine, and re-taught me the basics. Thank goodness for her tough love. I've been hooked ever since!!
