Introducing 4 Weeks of ModKid Giveaways! Week 1 - Kyoko Pattern

Patty Young has very kindly offered her wonderful ModKid sewing patterns for giveaways right here on The Fabric Shopper! To go along with the patterns, some of The Fabric Shopper's sponsors are offering you free fabric! Starting today, The Fabric Shopper will be giving away one ModKid sewing pattern teamed up with fabric from one site sponsor each week for the next 4 weeks!

Kicking things off we have the Kyoko pattern. Chic and sophisticated Asian-inspired shirt or dress, Kyoko features a criss-cross bodice with two sleeve length options and a very full attached stripwork skirt in two lengths. Kyoko has a loose-fitting style so there’s no need for buttons, zippers or snaps. A sweet obi-style sash pulls everything together and finishes the look.

The winner of the giveaway will also receive a set of 8 half-yard bundles of Alice Kennedy's Strawberry Fields for Timeless Treasures from Fabricworm Etsy. Included in the bundle is a 1/2 yard of each of the following fabrics: Mums, Pink Floral Paisley, Pink Strawberry, White Stripes/Fences, Sorbet Mums, Sorbet Meadow, Sorbet Scattered Dots, Fuchsia Mums Orange. Head over to Fabricworm Etsy to see all the fabrics.

How to enter? Tell us a little bit about the young lady you'd like to make the Kyoko shirt/dress for. You don't have to give us names, just a little story or short description. Maybe a Haiku or a poem, if you're feeling creative! Or, just a few descriptive words.

Fabric in Use - Piglet from Echino by Etsuko Furuya

I've received soooo many good ideas and helpful comments from the survey (what? you forgot to fill out the survey? well, here's the link: Click Here to take survey ) Anyway, there's a lot of good stuff in the works, some my ideas and some as suggested by you! Here's a new (reader suggested) feature that I thought was a great idea! You see graphics of fabrics on this web site and on fabric shop web sites, but it would be useful to see the fabric used in a project - to get a real sense of how it looks and what it could be used for.

The first featured fabric is Piglet from Echino by Etsuko Furuya. This fabric is 85% cotton, 15% linen canvas. It is the perfect example of, "What interesting fabric, whatever would I do with it?" Let's see what others are doing:

Jamie Christina of Pretty Ditty blog and owner of Phat Fabric, made a skirt (she followed the guidelines on how to make an A-line skirt from the book Sew What! Skirts). She says that this particular line of Echino fabrics is great for skirts. It is thick enough not to have to add a slip or lining, but not too heavy for summer.

Kelley from Porrothecat blog also made a skirt. She says the fabric is her absolute favorite and she credits the skirt's perfect zipper to the sturdiness of the fabric

Pillows, made by Anna Oler, (photo used by permission from her Flickr photostream). Her home was featured on Design Sponge's Sneak Peek in February.

Found on Etsy:

Echino Messenger Bag Pattern by Etsuko Furuya, found at Superbuzzy, Fabrics to Sew and Sheree's Alchemy. Instructions are in Japanese but diagrams are very detailed. Not a pattern for beginners, but those with some bag sewing experience should have little trouble following the diagrams.
